1. Artificial intelligence turns brain activity into speech
The currently existing systems for the people who are unable to speak can only read their eye or hand movements to decipher what they want to say. But no system is yet invented that can truly give a voice to them. This has changed as three research teams at Columbia University have made a system that collects data from neurons and converts this data into speech. The system can also mimic the vocal expressions of people using it.

2. A.I. is translating messages of long-lost languages
Understanding a long-lost language that existed several centuries ago can help us get access to many different cultures and decipher the information that might be hidden in the old testaments. This has motivated a research team including researchers from MIT and Google AI team to create an AI-powered system that can understand old languages using its relationship to a known progenitor language.

3. Training a single AI model can emit as much carbon as five cars in their lifetimes
While AI has several benefits in store for us, it can also be the number one reason for the worsening environmental conditions of our world. A recent study at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst found that training an AI model can emit more than 626,000 pounds of carbon dioxide equivalent.

4. AAAS: Machine learning ‘causing a science crisis’
Dr. Genevera Allen from Rice University in Houston recently presented a study at the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Washington which said that the current machine learning systems are leading to a “crisis in science” as they are the results produced are misleading. Scientists and researchers must improve their techniques if they want humanity to benefit from AI.

6. Artificial intelligence speeds efforts to develop clean, virtually limitless fusion energy
Electricity is what powers every single technology in the current era and its absence, humans are practically powerless. Scientists have therefore strived to find a continuous and powerful source of electricity and finally, we see AI taking the lead. A team of scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) and Princeton University is using deep learning to produce virtually limitless fusion energy for generating electricity.

7. This clever AI hid data from its creators to cheat at its appointed task
Like there was any less tension about AI taking over the world, an AI system has been found hiding data from its creators. The system called “CycleGAN” was being used to transform aerial images into street maps for Google by using a neural network and by digging deep into the unexpected extraordinary results it produced, scientists found that it was manipulating data to fool them.
